About this place
Tucked into a quiet side street in Minami-Azabu, Tsukushinbo draws a steady lunch crowd with its thoughtfully prepared Japanese set meals, heralded by the steam rising from freshly cooked rice and the comforting aroma of grilled fish. At the center of the midday menu are fish preparations that draw out inherent natural flavors: moist, flaky medai (Japanese butterfish) brushed with teriyaki glaze, alfonsino gently simmered in a light dashi broth, and simply salted, crispy-skinned grilled salmon.
The quiet centerpiece of each meal is the white rice, cooked in a traditional heavy-rimmed hagama pot. Each grain emerges glossy and distinct, with refills available so guests can savor every bit alongside the rich pan juices or savoury seasoning of the main dish. Jars of house-made kombu tsukudani (simmered kelp) and pickles on the table encourage an extra mouthful of rice, while fragrant miso soup and delicate small vegetable dishes complete a nourishing, well-rounded tray.
Inside, a peaceful counter creates an unhurried atmosphere that welcomes solo diners for a quiet meal. While daytime focuses on grilled fish and fried specialties, the evening sees the restaurant transition into a relaxed kappo-style dining spot, serving seasonal small plates and accompaniments meant to pair with sake and beer.
